Warner Bros. and director Patty Jenkins announced today that Wonder Woman 1984, her highly anticipated follow-up to 2017’s Gal Gadot-starring Wonder Woman, will not only open in theaters on December 25th this year, but will debut the same day on HBO Max, giving fans even more options regarding how they’d like to experience Diana’s next adventure.

In a tweet, Jenkins said, “At some point you have to choose to share any love and joy you have to give, over everything else. We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season.”

While theaters are open and operating in much of the United States, they aren’t available in every area. Debuting Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max at the same time will give Wonder Woman fans in these areas, and who would prefer to watch the move at home, an option that’s available everywhere within the US for the first month of the film’s release.

As the streaming home for all things DC, HBO Max is the perfect streaming venue for the blockbuster sequel, giving the service a slam-dunk movie offering at a time when younger fans are out of school and families may be looking for things to watch at home together. At the same time, ensuring the movie has a theatrical release will allow viewers who’d like to see it on the big screen to do so.

Wonder Woman 1984 is set over fifty years after its predecessor, in the decade of big hair and parachute pants. The movie will find Diana taking on two powerful new foes—Max Lord, played by Pedro Pascal, and the Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. The movie also features the return of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as Antiope and Connie Nielsen as Diana’s mother, Hippolyta. Wonder Woman, the movie’s Patty Jenkins-directed predecessor, grossed over $822 million at the worldwide box office and introduced the beloved female superhero to a new generation of fans.
